Many taxpayers await their refunds after filing their returns. It is important to understand that you do not need to file a separate claim for a refund; it is granted by the Assessing Officer if the tax paid by you exceeds the amount chargeable. [1] However, to ensure the money moves successfully from the Income Tax (IT) site to your bank account, you must follow specific validation steps and know how to track the status. Here is a step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Ensure Prerequisites are Met

Before expecting a refund, you must ensure your account and profile are set up correctly on the e-Filing portal. The refund cannot be credited if these conditions are not met:

Step 2: How to Check Your Refund Status (Post-Login)

If you have filed your return and want to check if the refund has been processed and sent to your bank, follow these steps on the official portal:

  1. Visit the official income tax e-filing portal at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/. [6]
  2. Log in using your User ID (PAN) and Password. [7], [6]
  3. Navigate to the e-File menu, select Income Tax Returns, and then click on View Filed Returns. [8], [9] Alternatively, navigate to the Refund/Demand Status section. [6]
  4. Select the applicable Assessment Year (e.g., AY 2025-26). [6]
  5. Click on View Details. This will display the life cycle of the return, including the status of your income tax refund. [6], [10]

Step 3: How to Check Refund Status (Pre-Login)

If you are unable to log in, you can still check the status of your ITR using the "Know Your ITR Status" service:

  1. Go to the e-Filing portal homepage and click on Income Tax Return (ITR) Status. [11]
  2. Enter your Acknowledgement Number and a valid mobile number, then click Continue. [11]
  3. Enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number. Note that the OTP is valid for 15 minutes, and you have 3 attempts to enter it correctly. [3]
  4. Click Submit. On successful validation, the ITR status will be displayed. [3]

Step 4: What to Do If the Refund is Delayed

If your refund status shows "Processed" but the money has not reached your bank account, or if processing is pending, consider the following:

Common Reasons for Delay

How to Raise a Grievance

If your refund is delayed without a clear reason, you can raise a grievance directly through the portal:

  1. Log in to the e-Filing portal and go to the Grievances menu, then select Submit Grievance. [7]
  2. Select the relevant Department. For refund processing issues, select CPC-ITR. [15]
  3. Select the Category Refund and the appropriate Subcategory. [16], [17]
  4. Enter the Assessment Year (AY) and write a description of your grievance (at least 100 characters). You may also upload relevant documents. [17]
  5. Click Submit Grievance and note the Grievance Acknowledgement Number to track the status later. [17]

Note: Refunds are generally credited within 4 to 6 weeks after e-verification, but the department legally has up to nine months from the end of the financial year to process refunds. [5]
